Filing Cabinet Makeover with Chalk Paint

To be honest I don’t feel like I’m old enough to be an adult. And while I’m still pretty new at adulting at the age of 24 I still feel like I’m somewhere around age 17. Like I feel as though I shouldn’t have my own home or go grocery shopping every week or get to stay out as late as I want. But that’s the other funny thing, I’m also a really old soul in that a good time on Friday night to me is getting a full 8 hours of sleep.

Every now and then though I’ll have a moment where the fact that I am an adult really hits me, realizing we needed a filing cabinet was one of those. What we have files and important documents and bills that need a place to hang out in our house?! Yes, Kate, yes you do.

So we bought a filing cabinet, second hand of course. My day job was selling a bunch of older ones so I purchased one for $15 (not too shabby!). But of course I had to spiff him up a bit.

This picture isn’t quite a before more like “I thought I wanted to spray paint it black but changed my mind and used paint stripper to scrap it off” photo. Which I was really nervous about painting over it because of how it looked but SPOLIER: It turned out fine!

I decided to go with chalk paint because it’s the answer to everything. The color is Sherwin Williams Gris (SW 7659) I sanded the surface to rough it up some and then applied one coat of Kiltz primer. After that it was two quick coats of chalk paint and done!

I haven’t quite decided if I want to put a clear coat on or not. I tried wax on a small project the other day and to be honest I’m not a fan. I think I kind of like the matte look though. I took some paper and cut to size and just suck it in the handle. It was hard to paint in there so that was just a quick way to hide (most) of it.

Now the really funny thing is the files still haven’t made it into the filing cabinet… I should probably get on that, and buying a new shade for that lamp!

Until next time,

  1. That’s so funny, we moved like 6 months ago and have a cabinet that stood outside over the MN winter…oiy. I really laughed at your lamp shade comment, had to go back and look again. I LOVE the lamp shade!!! It’s so funny how tastes differ. 🙂 Have you tried different chalk paint brands? And do you have a favorite or is chalk paint just chalk paint and what you get is good enough? I haven’t used it yet but am inspired to since I just read a second post by you about it!!! 🙂 I also have a couple of chairs to update and perhaps my desk now…haha! 🙂

    1. I actually make my own chalk paint! I bought a tub of Plaster of Paris from Michael’s for about $10. I get the sample sizes of paint from Home Depot to color match whatever I’m wanting, add one tablespoon Plaster of Paris to one sample size paint, and two tablespoons water and mix it together! Sometimes I add a little more water, you want it to be thinner so it’s almost kind of runny! I’ve barely made a dent in the plaster of Paris, it’s definitely cheaper than buying name brand chalk paint!
